Bramley Fire Station

Bramley Fire Station's Last day

Bramley Fire Station on Stanningley Road was a major part of the Brigades infrastructure during the 70's 80's and 90's.  The  fire station at Bramley was constructed in 1948 and was closed as a fire station when Stanningley Community Fire Station opened on 10 February 2003 to
replace both Bramley and Pudsey stations. The building mainly consisted of four appliance bays separated centrally by a main circulation area which leads to the main staircase. The upstairs floor plan provides accommodation over the appliance bays giving the potential for the creation of office accommodation. As with most fire stations, the large surrounding area to the building is finished with significant areas of level tarmac for vehicular and training use. The building fronts onto Stanningley Road, partly adjacent to a traffic light road junction with Cockshott Lane, at the other side of the dual carriageway. When operational, the fire station had Wig Wag traffic light controls to access the highway in emergency calls. Normal vehicular access and egress was by a sub standard arrangement set back from the traffic lights. The sub standard access and egress arrangements for normal traffic use of the site were only permitted by the Highways Authority due to the Fire Station use of the site. The station had hosted a variety of appliances through the years: Dodge, Dennis,Volvo pumps Turntable Ladders , Salvage Tenders and Foam Tenders.

Steel River Blues first came to our screen on September 1, 2004 and ran until October 13, 2004. The show wasn't as popular as the makers would have liked and sadly after its last viewing never returned to our screens.

Steel River Blues was a new fire-fighter drama from ITV, the makers of Londons Burning. While London's Burning was set in London, Steel River Blues is set in Middlesborough. The show is radically different from London's Burning in many ways. Due to the location the nature of the disasters is varied and vastly different. It's also more grittier and fast paced than London's Burning as well as more modern. The Executive Producer is Keith Richardson who is also responsible for the highly successful Heartbeat and The Royal. However, Steel Blue Rivers is far from cosy like the above shows.

Safety Central (The Future)

The Fire Place concept (Now Safety Central) emerged in 2005 when consideration was being given to the future use of the defunct Bramley Fire Station. In the 2006-7 West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority Corporate Plan the plans for the Fire Place (Safety central) are described as: “A modern interactive Youth Community Centre, planned for 2008 will present opportunities for schools and youth groups to experience an interactive fire safety learning environment“

Pioneering Safety Centre Open in Leeds

Safety Central, a pioneering £3.5m safety education centre developed on the site of the old Bramley Fire Station opened its doors on 19 October. The official opening was attended by fire, police, council and NHS chiefs from across the county. from across the county. The centre will operate as a centre of excellence across West Yorkshire and is unique to the region in that it will cover all aspects of safety awareness and education. Although the project is led by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, its partners include local councils, emergency services, the NHS and voluntary groups.
"Safety Central is the first of its kind and raises the bar in terms of multi-agency working to promote safety in the home, on our roads and in our lifestyles," said Chief Fire Officer Simon Pilling. "Fies and accidents, deaths and injuries, happen for all sorts of reasons and no single agency will make a dramatic difference.  We need to break down institutional boundaries, roll up our sleeves and work together." Councillor David Ridgway, who chairs  West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, said that Safety Central    offered a glimpse into the future as far as public services were run. "The days when local authorities worked in silos are gone for good.  People who are in need of help don't care who provides it; they only care that help is there when it's needed. "I am certain that quite a few national politicians will be looking at the Safety Central model over the coming months." Staff at Safety Central, led by manager Gayle Elvidge, have already launched a wide range of projects working with schools, colleges and people with disabilities. A dedicated interactive web site will soon be developed to help spread safety advice to the wider world. Safer Central has: a state-of-the-art training complex conference rooms : accessible meeting rooms : space for exhibition, events and activities. In keeping with its trailblazing credentials, the building has been designed to the highest environmental standards including: photovoltaic panels to produce electricity : renewable energy for heating and cooling : rainwater harvesting systems for the flushing of toilets : high efficiency lighting and improved insulation to reduce  heat loss.

The official opening took place as arranged by Councillor Ridgway and CFO Pilling. It was preceded by active demonstrations and exhibitions and included a tribute from Pudsey councillor, Mick Coulson, who helped steer Safety Central from its inception and has been its champion within Leeds City Council.

ARSON TASK FORCES SMASH TARGETS TO NET £5m. CASH REWARD

Three of West Yorkshire’s arson task forces have smashed through targets for reducing fires involving property and cars pulling in more than £5m. in reward grants for their local communities.
Cases of arson in the Leeds district have reduced by 75 per cent since 2001/2 to
just 899, attracting a £3.35 performance grant.
Deliberate and accidental fires in Bradford have fallen by over 49 per cent to 1,310
(£1.2m.)
Deliberate and accidental fires in Wakefield have reduced by over 41 per cent to
680 (£750,000).
“Arson is the single biggest cause of fire in the UK, resulting in two deaths and 50 injuries every week,” explained Assistant Chief Fire Officer Craig McIntosh. “The aim of creating multi agency arson task forces was to bring together agencies such as fire, police and district councils to tackle fire setting at its roots by better prevention, education, detection and prosecution. Statistics show that a reduction in arson across the Bradford and Wakefield districts has also been accompanied by a welcome drop in accidental fires as well. That’s a fantastic achievement which improves the quality of life for many communities traditionally plagued by crime and antisocial behaviour.”
Mr. McIntosh said he was delighted that the rate of progress had been so dramatic, smashing though local and national targets, and attracting over £5m. in reward grants to be spent on further improvements in community safety and wellbeing through the local
area agreement mechanisms. Mr. McIntosh will be paying a public tribute to all three arson task forces at a reception to be held at Safety Central, West Yorkshire’s new state of the art education and training complex in Bramley on Friday, 13 November.
