About Me
Joined the old West Riding Brigade in February 1966 and served at Shipley, then a 2 pump station (565 & 566) WL & PWT. It was also home to the old Stack Grab which was a converted WW2 lorry (Commer I think). Civil Defence Garage aslo at side of station with Green Godess, Commer Hose layer and several motor cycles. Chief at that time was the renowned Harry Judge who I believe ended up as Commandant at Moreton in Marsh. Saw the introduction of the 45' alloy ladder, new Normalair BA's from the proto and salvus, new style operational jackets and domed helmets. End of hook ladders and carry-down without safety harness.
I think it was late 1966 when the Leeds Bradford airport crews were formed from the ranks of local stations for the then Yeadon Teerminal. . Gained very much experience but sadly left May 1968 to join the Army, mainly due to low pay (£12-£13 per week). Top rate after 6 years was £18 for the 48 hour week of 3,3, and 3.
Took a few photos during that period, gloried in the camaraderie and retained some great memories. Chief on leaving was Kenneth Holland. Very interested in the older machines and loved the old Dennis Pump Escapes, nearest then were at Bingley and Rawdon.
