Recuitment of female and ethnic minority staff

Posted by John Stead on March 28, 2009 at 10:18 AM

With reference to the above, can anyone explain to me why there is not one set standard for all applicants, and only the best are chosen?

If 'ethnic minorities' and females wish to join the service, then fine, but not at the expense of someone who would have made a better firefighter!

I'm sick and fed up of this country having to bend over backwards for other people!

If someone want to join, I think that they should get every encouragement, but let them apply on a level playing field, not, as used to happen with women applicants, getting one to one tuition at training school and retaking exams until they passed!

OK....rant over.....I get grumpier as I get older, but let's see what a can of worms this has opened!

John, I can agree with that.

I think the service has to 'Appear' & make an effort to promote the recruitment of ethnic minorities & women firefighters.

I think they have to recruit so many, In line with Government policies etc.

I have yet to see a 'Polish or a Romanian' Firefighter at W Yorkshire.

Regards.

I've often asked the question...why, when we are an "equal opportunities" public service, do we segregate people on the awareness days? e.g.....female day, ethnic minorities day and general day. Surely we should be integrating every applicant from day one!!
I've never had a straight answer to this.
I know my name and where I work is obvious from my username, but just for the record, I don't think I've broken any rules by putting this....just my disclaimer.
You can tell I'm paranoid though, eh? Shouldn't be, I know.
