Blast from the past

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 6:10 PM

Hi Mark

Long time since i heard from you.  Hope you are well.

The fire at Oakroyd Dyeing on Thornton Road was another incident which i attended.

This fire began as a turnout with one pump to a reported skip on fire.  It verty quickly escalated to fifteen pumps and a large building fire.  Red watch were there all night and also the following night.

The blast from the past series is excellent and brings back many memories of bradfords largest fires.

Hope to chat soon

Hi Ben, Yes Champion thanks, I have often wondered what you were upto nowadays, I am meeting more and more Fire Service 'Escapees' all the time mainly in my line of work, If you were on Red watch you will have worked for Ken Daphne, And worked with Mick E ? on the TL My mate Big Keith Shaw Ex Odsal Sub told me you two worked together.

I don't know many from Red Watch, But mainly from Blue a few from white, Les Cowlin, Stuart Smith lived next door to me for many years.

Living in Birstall I know alot of the old Batley/Morley/Dewsbury lads, Walford brothers !! Steve Preston, Tony O'Grady, Johhny Cousins, Brian Dunning, Glen Thompson (Pipe Man)

I go upto F/Green on occasion to their display, And try and go when either Ronnie's Blue crew are on or Mick Smith's Green watch are on the run !!

I have a few large items to be displayed there soon.

I saw many a large mill go up in the night !! But as I have said before the 1984 5th November Preston St 25 pumps + is probably the largest to date, Damn if only I had a camera on me !! what a sight - And your shift were 'Lucky' to be there at the start lol lol !!

I am hoping to post some old fireman stories from the 'Blast from the past' era on here soon.

Best Regards & Thanks for your message.
Mark Elliot.
